As more and more people look to social media outlets for up-to-the-minute information about topics relevant to them, traditional media outlets, like newspapers, also are harnessing the technologies to stay connected to their readers. The goal of all surgical intervention is to allow patients to have a procedure completed in the best way that will optimize and improve their health. One of the emerging methods to achieve decreased pain with surgery, minimal blood loss, fewer complications, shorter hospital stay, faster return to activities of daily living and improved patient satisfaction is through minimally invasive surgical techniques. The idea of minimally invasive surgery is to be able to perform many types of surgical procedures through small incisions. Robotic technology is one way that we are accomplishing this goal. Additionally, complex procedures can now be performed with a minimally invasive approach through skilled surgeons using robotic technology, all accomplished with an outpatient or short hospital stay. The new fitness center at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley will officially open on March 22. The facility will offer cardio and weight room equipment as well as a room for group fitness and aerobics classes. Fitness center hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. (more)
Madlyn L. Hanes, chancellor and professor of education at Penn State Harrisburg, will become the next vice president for Commonwealth Campuses at Penn State. Hanes will replace John J. Romano, who is retiring June 30 after 42 years of service to the University. (See http://live.psu.edu/story/43368 online.) Studies have shown that people who understand health instructions make fewer mistakes when they take their medicine or prepare for a medical procedure. Jacqueline McLaughlin, associate professor of biology at Penn State Lehigh Valley, is a recipient of this year's International Women's Day Spirit of Internationalization Award, given by Penn State's University Office of Global Programs (UOGP). McLaughlin will be recognized at UOGP's third annual breakfast celebration of International Women's Day, to be held at 8:30 a.m. on March 16, in Heritage Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus.
