Conservators begin work on Penn State's Land-Grant Frescoes

Old Main is the home of the Land-Grant Frescoes, depicting Penn State's founding and early development, painted by Henry Varnum Poor in 1940 and 1949. This photo was taken in Old Main's lobby in 1948. The frescoes, considered by many to be a treasured piece of American art history, will be conserved thanks to an anonymous, $1.5 million philanthropic gift.
Monday, March 12, 2012

Preliminary work began March 12 on the restoration of the lobby of Old Main and the conservation and ultimate preservation of the historic Land-Grant Frescoes on Penn State's University Park campus. The frescoes project, funded by a $1.5 million gift from an anonymous donor, will be accompanied by the restoration of the entire Old Main lobby to reflect accurately its appearance in 1948 when the 1,300-square-foot frescoes were completed by Henry Varnum Poor. The works are the only frescoes at an American university created by an American artist, and the risk that this landmark might be damaged irreparably prompted a highly sophisticated initiative to preserve the frescoes for posterity. Wine experts' ratings may be a wash for many consumers

A wine expert's acute sense of taste may mean that expert ratings and recommendations are irrelevant to wine consumers who were not born with the ability to discern small differences in a broad range of tastes, according to a team of international researchers.
Thursday, March 01, 2012

Not all wines are created equal; neither are all wine tasters. A wine expert's acute sense of taste may mean that expert ratings and recommendations are irrelevant to wine consumers who were not born with the ability to discern small differences in a broad range of tastes, according to a team of international researchers. "What we found is that the fundamental taste ability of an expert is different," said John Hayes, assistant professor, food science, and director of Penn State's sensory evaluation center. (more)

Cold air chills heart's oxygen supply

People with heart disease may not be able to compensate for their bodies' higher demand for oxygen when inhaling cold air, according to Penn State researchers, making snow shoveling and other activities dangerous for some. "This study can help us understand why cold air is such a trigger for coronary events," said Lawrence I. Sinoway, Distinguished Professor of Medicine and director of the Heart and Vascular Institute, Penn State College of Medicine. (more)

New treatment for bedbugs causes less disruption

Monday, February 27, 2012

As bedbugs continue to be a growing problem in apartment buildings, dorm rooms, hotels, hospitals and homes across the country, a new treatment method is proving to be very effective and less disruptive for students at Penn State.

According to David Manos, assistant director of housing at Penn State, whole room heat treatment is changing the way they treat for bedbugs in campus residence halls. "Previously, once a case was confirmed, the room would be quarantined and it would be treated with combinations of chemicals and heat treatments for individual items. All clothing and bedding would have to be run through the dryer, and the student would be displaced for a minimum of 21 days. It was very labor intensive, typically one room would require 20-30 hours of time, as well as very disruptive to the student," said Manos. (more)
