Penn State York's Powerlifting Club won the 2009 World Powerlifting Competition, sponsored by the World National Powerlifting Federation, on Oct. 17 in Atlantic City, N.J. This was the team's first time at the world competition and they came away as the champions. The York team has placed first in nationals for four years, from 2006 to 2009. (more)
Penn State York's soccer team, the No. 3 seed in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), will travel to Burlington, Vt., to take on Concordia College, Alabama, at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. The York team heads to the tournament on the heels of capturing the championship in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) on Saturday, Oct. 31, when they beat their rival Penn College, 1-0. York hasn't won the PSUAC championship since 1997 but lost to Penn College in the championship last year. (more)
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders marked by impaired social interactions, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, and communication impairment, which persist throughout a person's lifetime. The ASD prevalence rate--the number of individuals diagnosed with autism--has been steadily increasing over time. A new report from the U.S. Department of Health's Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), based on a phone survey of over 78,000 families, set the prevalence rate at nearly one in 91 children. This is an increase from the prior statistic of one in 150 children reported in 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says The Medical Minute, a service of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Penn State York's Cultural and Performing Artists Series continues when the Piscataway Indian Nation Singers and Dancers perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, in the campus' Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center). In celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month, the group will present a living history program featuring authentic American Indian dance, drum, and songs. When plum pox was discovered in Adams County peach trees in October 1999 -- the first time the disease had been found in North America -- the nation's stone-fruit growers watched anxiously to see how Pennsylvania would respond. As the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture officially lifted the quarantine of the area's stone fruit Oct. 29 -- certifying the state as plum-pox free -- James Travis reflected on the 10-year, collaborative eradication effort and the agricultural catastrophe it averted. The virus threatened to wipe out the state's $25 million annual production of peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines and cherries. (more)

Penn State York's soccer team is the top seed in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) going into their match against No. 4 seed Penn State Hazleton in the first round of the playoffs at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in York on the campus fields. The winner of this contest will go on to play in the PSUAC championship. If York wins, they will host the championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, at home. (more)
