Penn State York students in development and administration of human services programs (HD FS 455) class have planned a second fundraising event to benefit the children of their late classmate, Michelle Plaza. A basket bingo is set for Sunday, Dec. 6 from 2 - 4 p.m. in the conference center of the Main Classroom Building at the campus. Last month the class held a roller skating party to benefit The Plaza Children's Fund.
Plaza was shot in July and left behind three children ages 18, 13, and 7. She graduated with an associate degree in human development and family studies in May 2009 and had planned to return to campus this fall to continue her studies toward a baccalaureate degree. (more)
A variety of acts will take to the stage at Penn State York's Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) for the third annual Paw Search, a family friendly talent and variety show benefit set for Friday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from this event go to the Penn State Dance Marathon, fondly known as THON, to help children with cancer through the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
This year's show features Ty Barnett, a standup comedian as emcee. Barnett was the 2006 runner-up on NBS's "Last Comic Standing" where he faced-off with the eventual winner, Josh Blue. Since then, Barnett has appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and as a regular on the "Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson." Additional television credits include "Comedy Central Presents," "Premium Blend," and numerous television commercials. He also appeared in the feature film Stand-up. (more)
Nov. 19 is this year's Great American Smokeout. Since the Surgeon General identified the dangers of smoking, Americans have gradually quit, yet about 1 in 5 Americans still smoke. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that about 4,000 young adolescents start smoking every day and 6 percent of middle school students are smokers. If ever there were a time to think about quitting smoking, it's now. (more)

Submissions of artwork for the sixth annual Penn State York Student Art Show are being accepted through noon on Thursday, Nov. 19, in room 110 of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) on campus. The show is sponsored by the Penn State York Visual Arts Club.
The artwork of Penn State York students will be featured in the north glass lobbies of the second and third floors of The Pullo Center beginning Friday, Nov. 20. An opening reception is set from 3 to 5 p.m. that day. (more)
Penn State York's women's and men's basketball teams start their season this week with the women at Valley Forge Christian School on Thursday, Nov. 12 and the men at York College of Pennsylvania's White Rose City Classic tournament on Sunday, Nov. 15.
The Lady Lions take on Valley Forge Christian School in Valley Forge at 6:30 p.m. Their first home game is set for Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. when they play Lancaster Bible College at Penn State York. (more)
Attention student playwrights, Penn State York's Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) and the Penn State York Theatre Program are sponsoring the second annual playwriting competition and the deadline for submissions has been extended until Dec. 11. The competition is open to Penn State York students enrolled this semester; plays of 10 to 30 minutes are being accepted. Prizes of $250 for first prize, $150 for second prize and $100 for third prize are being awarded. It is possible that there also may be a production or reading by the Penn State York Theatre Program in spring 2010. (more)

About 23.6 million Americans have diabetes and another 54 million are at risk to develop the disease. As these numbers continue to increase, Diabetes Awareness Month, observed throughout November, is more important than ever. Diabetes, a disease in which the body can't regulate the amount of sugar in the blood, currently affects about 8 percent of the population, a number that is increasing rapidly, according to this week's edition of The Medical Minute, a service of the Penn State Milton S. On Nov. 9, USA Today -- the nation's top-selling newspaper -- in cooperation with Penn State launched a new e-Edition for Penn State students as part of the University's continuing mission to promote newspaper reading as a way of integrating real world with classroom study. Since 1997, Penn State has had a readership program in place -- the first of its kind in the nation and a model for more than 500 collegiate readership programs nationwide. (more)
