Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders marked by impaired social interactions, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, and communication impairment, which persist throughout a person's lifetime. The ASD prevalence rate--the number of individuals diagnosed with autism--has been steadily increasing over time. A new report from the U.S. Department of Health's Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), based on a phone survey of over 78,000 families, set the prevalence rate at nearly one in 91 children. This is an increase from the prior statistic of one in 150 children reported in 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says The Medical Minute, a service of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. "ALICE: Tales of a Curious Girl" by playwright Karen Hartman will be the fall Studio Theatre production at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
While the title character may be familiar, "this is not Disney's version of the Lewis Carroll stories," said production director Chrystyna Dail, a member of Penn State Erie's theatre faculty. The storyline is indeed driven by a curious girl named Alice who leaps from a stifling photographer's studio into a Wonderland where cakes talk, cats smoke, and little girls change size, "but Hartman's play draws heavily on direct literary devices found in the Carroll books," Dail said. "This Alice story examines Carroll's construction of gender within his novels and how they support or contradict Victorian notions of gender."
"ALICE: Tales of a Curious Girl" performance dates are 8 p.m. on Nov 12 through 14 and Nov. 17 through 19. There will be one 2 p.m. matinee, on Sunday, Nov. 15. (more)
