Instructors who are concerned about the potential effect of the flu in the classroom, on their personal health or on their ability to teach are invited to attend a workshop from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 3. Sponsored by the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, the brown-bag workshop as part of the Noontime Roundtable Discussion series. The Erie Philharmonic Chorus will host its third annual 'Messiah' sing-along on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
Anyone who has sung -- or always wanted to sing -- G.F. Handel's most famous composition is invited to join the 85-voice Erie Philharmonic Chorus for the sing-along, which takes place at 7 p.m. at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, 130 E. Fourth St., Erie. Admission is $5 per person and all proceeds benefit the Young People's Chorus of Erie. Participants who own a 'Messiah' score are encouraged to bring it that evening. (more)
Nov. 19 is this year's Great American Smokeout. Since the Surgeon General identified the dangers of smoking, Americans have gradually quit, yet about 1 in 5 Americans still smoke. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that about 4,000 young adolescents start smoking every day and 6 percent of middle school students are smokers. If ever there were a time to think about quitting smoking, it's now. (more)
Continuing Education at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, hosted a youth outreach program for Upward Bound on Saturday, Nov. 14. Fifty high school students participated in three workshops centered on engineering, the health sciences and science. They also toured campus.
Coordinated through the Northwest Tri-county Intermediate Unit, Upward Bound provides students with support and assistance as they prepare for college, both to increase participants' completion of high school plus acceptance to and graduation from college. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. (more)

About 23.6 million Americans have diabetes and another 54 million are at risk to develop the disease. As these numbers continue to increase, Diabetes Awareness Month, observed throughout November, is more important than ever. Diabetes, a disease in which the body can't regulate the amount of sugar in the blood, currently affects about 8 percent of the population, a number that is increasing rapidly, according to this week's edition of The Medical Minute, a service of the Penn State Milton S. On Nov. 9, USA Today -- the nation's top-selling newspaper -- in cooperation with Penn State launched a new e-Edition for Penn State students as part of the University's continuing mission to promote newspaper reading as a way of integrating real world with classroom study. Since 1997, Penn State has had a readership program in place -- the first of its kind in the nation and a model for more than 500 collegiate readership programs nationwide. (more)
