Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders marked by impaired social interactions, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, and communication impairment, which persist throughout a person's lifetime. The ASD prevalence rate--the number of individuals diagnosed with autism--has been steadily increasing over time. A new report from the U.S. Department of Health's Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), based on a phone survey of over 78,000 families, set the prevalence rate at nearly one in 91 children. This is an increase from the prior statistic of one in 150 children reported in 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says The Medical Minute, a service of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Sarah Ma, Greater Allegheny enrollment management officer, is traveling in China for 10 days on a recruitment trip. Sarah is responsible for recruitment of international students for the Greater Allegheny campus and spent the last seven and a half years living and working in China. (more)
Students will have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. on Dec. 5, and view the renowned exhibit of the Terra Cotta warriors at the National Geographic Museum.
The trip is being co-sponsored by the Teaching East Asia and Honors programs, and also will include a stop at the Freer Gallery to view their Asian art collection.
Part 2 of a series on East Asian painting took place on Tuesday Nov. 3. Students had the opportunity to learn about and practice basic techniques, instructed by Elaine Bergstrom. The first class in September focused on painting orchids, whereas the November class learned to paint chrysanthemums. Two more classes will be presented in Spring 2010, as part of the year-long Teaching International campus focus on East Asia. (more)

During a one-day trip from Greater Allegheny to University Park on Friday, Nov. 6, Penn State Greater Allegheny students eligible for transfer to the University Park campus, will have a day full of programs to help ease the transition. (more)
On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Athletic Department conducted an All Sports Camp at Auberle in McKeesport, Pa. Also, the men's and women's basketball teams have begun to prepare for the first games of the season. (more)
