As the nation marks National Military Appreciation Month in May, Penn State is reporting 40 percent growth in enrollments of active-duty military and veteran students in Penn State's World Campus for 2011, or 14 percent of all online enrollments. This trend is the result of Penn State's dedicated Military Admissions and Advising Team. (more)
Cara Colantuono, a 2007 graduate of Penn State Brandywine, has transformed her passion for service into a nonprofit organization aimed at helping veterans. Colantuono, of South Philadelphia, is the chairman and founder of Support Homeless Veterans (SHV). Created in 2011, SHV seeks to create permanent housing for chronically homeless veterans. (more)

Penn State York and Penn State,The Lancaster Center are offering a free informational conference, Duty to Degree: Informational Conference for Veterans, on Saturday, April 14 in York, and Saturday, April 21 in Lancaster. The program is designed for veterans interested in learning more about their military benefits and the educational opportunities available.
Topics to be covered at each conference include benefits, financial aid, academic choice, career information, and admission options. Attendees can also meet with veterans who have successfully managed the challenges of becoming successful students and the graduates who have gone on to fulfilling careers. (more)

Realizing that there are many challenges associated with the decision of veterans to start or return to college, an information session and dinner are set for 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Conference Center at Penn State New Kensington. The Veterans Open House is geared to nontraditional students, those classified as at least 24 years old, who are looking for a career change or seeking additional education. The program provides prospective adult students with information on the various certificate, associate, and baccalaureate programs offered at Penn State New Kensington and tips on how to finance a Penn State education. More military veterans and active-duty military members are choosing Penn State as their education provider. As of spring 2011, there were 3,166 students using their Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits throughout the University system -- an increase of 21 percent over 2010. With the planned drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number of these students will likely continue to increase at all Penn State campuses. A series of free professional development webinars, developed by a University-wide team in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Center, is being offered to staff members who assist these students with admissions, advising, financial aid, outreach, psychological and disabilities services. College-bound veterans are invited to a special open house at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the Admissions Suite in the Eberly Building. The open house will provide veterans considering college this summer or fall an opportunity to streamline the college application and student aid process if they are interested in Penn State Fayette.
