Penn State turfgrass research and education will get a boost as the result of a recent gift to the College of Agricultural Sciences. Pennsylvania Turfgrass Research Inc. gave the college $300,000 to establish an endowment -- the Pennsylvania Turf Research Innovation Fund -- that will provide financial support for studies to address important issues facing the turf industry, while creating new research opportunities for students. When viewers tuned in to watch the Masters on the weekend of April 10 -- whether to see how Tiger Woods played after his recent troubles, or just to watch the greatest golfers in the world perform on arguably the game's most prominent stage -- many no doubt marveled at the beauty of the Augusta National Golf Club. Alumni from the Golf Course Turfgrass Management program in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences play a big role in keeping these Georgia golf courses among the best in the world. (more)

It has been said that the sun never sets on Penn State-developed turfgrass varieties because they carpet so many golf courses around the world. Similarly, many of the best golf courses on the planet are under the care of Penn State-educated turfgrass professionals. Another high-profile example was on display Aug. 13-16 when the best professional golfers descended on Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., for the PGA Championship. (more)

When Sara Camuso turned 16, her father told her to get a job, or she would have to go to work with him.
"When I couldn't find a job, I ended up working with my dad, who is a golf course superintendent," recalls the 2008 Penn State turfgrass science graduate from Waynesboro, Pa. "By the end of the summer I really fell in love with what we were doing out there on the golf course." (more)

Penn State's turfgrass science program has received a $40,000 grant from The Toro Co. to support student activities, along with product donations that include an aerator and other Toro equipment valued at about $25,000. Toro's cash grant will help give student teams the opportunity to travel and compete in two major turfgrass events. The new aerator will be used for demonstration and instructional purposes. (more)
