Neil Barnas has just completed a rigorous master's degree program at Penn State, but instead of joining fellow graduates for commencement ceremonies Aug. 14 at University Park campus, the Air Force captain will be preparing for his new assignment at the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program Office, a Department of Defense unit involved with aircraft weapon systems for the U.S military and its allies. Barnas is one of 27 working professionals from around the nation who are the first graduates of the new Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering program offered by Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies and delivered online through the University's World Campus. The online Master's Degree in Systems Engineering program from Penn State's World Campus has attracted students from the world's most successful firms and is now accepting applications for a second student group.
Dr. James Nemes, lead faculty for the online systems engineering master's degree program and the director of the Penn State Great Valley's System Engineering program, said students in the first group of the online systems engineering master's program are employed by firms including: Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse, Merck, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Nucor Steel and Raytheon.

According to the latest job outlook by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), engineers must continue their education to keep up with the latest advancements and technologies in their fields. In an effort to help busy engineers continue their education without interrupting their careers, Penn State's World Campus, a unit of Outreach, is now accepting applications for a new online Master in Systems Engineering.
