Monk worked in The Dining Room at The Nittany Lion Inn as sous chef for six years. He was hired as executive chef in May and cherishes the opportunities, challenges and possibilities the new position awards him. (more)
While many are focusing on atmospheric solutions to reduce greenhouse gases, some researchers are setting their sights on the ground -- deep underground. Li Li, an assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering at Penn State, is investigating geologic carbon sequestration (storing carbon dioxide deep beneath the surface of the Earth) as a way to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Students on the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team are putting the finishing touches on presentations and materials in preparation for the EcoCAR 2 Year One Final Competition in Los Angeles beginning Thursday, May 17. Penn State is one of 15 North American teams competing in EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of a General Motors-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu by improving its fuel efficiency and reducing its emissions while retaining its performance and consumer appeal. Throughout year one, students were hard at work designing their advanced propulsion technologies to incorporate in their vehicle in years two and three. (more)
Penn State's Hospitality Services has just installed a sophisticated utility control system which is expected to save its two hotels about $350,000 a year. As the new control systems are activated all hotel employees are being challenged to play a key role in energy conservation. (more)
Three Penn State students received the University's first Student Sustainability Leadership Awards on Friday, April 20, and were honored with the planting of a heritage tree in their name near the Fisher Plaza on the University Park campus. (more)
In 2009, Dow launched the Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge Award (SISCA) program. The program is designed to promote forward thinking in social and environmental responsibility, and acknowledges the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of students and their professors who support their innovations. Penn State has been invited to join the set of Universities participating in the program. (more)
On May 4, there will be a convenient on-campus location to drop off old electronic equipment for it to be safely and securely recycled. Electronic Recycling Day, hosted by Keystone State Auctioneers and Penn State Lion Surplus, will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 4 at the Lion Surplus Building on Services Road on Penn State's University Park campus. Penn State football coach Bill O'Brien kicked off Penn State's Earth Day celebration with a rousing call to action and the recommendation that Penn State Earth Day should be called Blue-White-Green Day going forward, and that he will encourage his players to help make the campus more sustainable and support an entire Blue-White-Green Weekend in the future. Richard Alley, the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, will be the host of three hours of programming on WPSU-TV on Earth Day, April 22. The premiere of two new installments of his "Earth: The Operators' Manual" series, focused on climate change and sustainable energy, will occur at 7 p.m., with the program "Energy Quest U.S.A.," and at 10:30 p.m., with "Powering the Planet." The new shows will be preceded by an encore of the original program, "Earth: The Operators' Manual," at 6 p.m. (more)
Penn State York students, faculty, staff, and friends and neighbors will clean-up the campus woods from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 20 as part of an Earth Day Celebration. The event is being organized by the campus' recently formed Green Team, the Penn State York Student Government Association, and the Penn State Sustainability Office. Sunday, April 22 is the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day and a variety of events are set to take place across the University. (more)
