Jan. 10 was like any other Tuesday at the Penn State Meats Lab, where animals raised on the University's farms are brought to harvest and processed, with the finished products available for sale on Friday.

Looking to narrow her focus as an Environmental Resource Management major, Penn State senior Lisa Boudeman decided to spend last summer getting hands-on experience with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.
The Danville, Pa., native interned at USDA's Pasture Systems and Watershed Management Laboratory on the University Park campus. The lab works closely with the College of Agricultural Sciences on projects related to water quality and agricultural methods. (more)

Amy Hinkle had her first entrepreneurial encounter with flowers when she was 11 years old, selling them at her local farmers market in Columbus, Ohio. Now a Penn State senior majoring in horticulture with a business production focus, Hinkle wants to pursue a career in cut-flower growing with goal of owning a specialty cut-glower farm and selling her products to florists. After working at a racehorse farm, Penn State animal sciences graduate Danielle Breese returned to the University to pursue another passion -- teaching English as a second language -- while completing her teaching certificate in agricultural education. A Penn State-affiliated program has helped her hone her Spanish language skills and gain experience teaching agricultural curriculum in Ecuador. (more)

A team of Penn State students are helping a Pennsylvania farm to reduce waste nutrients and generate energy, thanks to a course-based academic competition.
The students participated in an innovative program, called the Learning Factory, through the Biological Engineering Design (BE 466W) class. Since its inception in 1995, the Learning Factory has allowed participants to partner with companies and sponsors, bringing real-world problems to the classroom. (more)

Eric Johnson spent three months last summer as a wildlife intern in North Carolina, working with the Bald Head Island Conservancy, handling a wide variety of fascinating duties.
From deer and alligator population surveys to beach-dune-erosion experiments to protection of sea turtle nests, the Penn State senior loved the hands-on nature of the work. Majoring in wildlife and fisheries science, the Fleetville, Pa., native was one of 12 interns who were given a wide range of responsibilities. (more)

While many college students spend the summer months working in their old seasonal jobs or interning in an office, Penn State junior Liz Walker had a unique summer experience on an alpaca farm as part of a once-in-a-lifetime internship. After working with small animals for a few years, the animal sciences major in the College of Agricultural Sciences hoped to branch out. "I wanted to work with large animals and get experience," Walker said. "I was excited. Alpacas originally were imported from overseas, so to have an opportunity to work with them was unusual." (more)
