Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

The 2012 NCAA National Champion Penn State wrestling team continued to haul in national academic honors with the release of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic First Team listing as well as the top 30 team break-down. Fresh off notching 11 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, head coach Cael Sanderson's two-time defending champions had four wrestlers named to the NWCA's National All-Academic First Team. (more)

The Penn State field hockey team, under the direction of head coach Charlene Morett, has been recognized by Gladiatior and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for sporting a team GPA above 3.0. In addition, the Nittany Lions had nine players named to the Gladiator Division I National Academic Squad. (more)

The Penn State football team produced another outstanding academic performance during the fall 2011 semester, with 38 squad members earning at least a 3.0 grade point average. Among the 38 Nittany Lions above a 3.0 GPA, 16 earned Dean's List recognition by posting a 3.5 GPA or higher this past semester. (more)

Representing seven fall sports, 68 Penn State student-athletes were honored as Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Penn State's 68 honorees brings the Nittany Lions' all-time total to 3,852 during the 18 years of the program. Penn State's 68 honorees ranked fourth among the 12 Big Ten institutions. In addition, the women's volleyball team totaled eight honorees to tie for first with Illinois. (more)

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has recognized the Penn State Football program for the Nittany Lions' Graduation Success Rate for the 21st time in the AFCA's annual Academic Achievement Award survey. The honorable mention recognition marks the 21st time the Nittany Lions have been recognized by the AFCA in the 25 years they have been eligible. (more)

Twenty-four Penn State student-athletes are scheduled to graduate during Commencement exercises Saturday on the University Park campus. Student-athletes representing 12 different Penn State squads are on the approved to graduate list, including seven members of the football team and three members of the women's lacrosse team. (more)

The Big Ten Conference has recognized a total of 534 student-athletes who have been selected as recipients of the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. In its third year, the award honors student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher during the most recent academic year. A total of 45 Penn State student-athletes were selected for the 2010-11 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. Twenty-one sports were represented by Nittany Lions honorees, led by women's swimming and diving and softball (6), field hockey (4), men's gymnastics, women's tennis and women's track and field (3), men's cross country, football, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and men's track and field (2). Seventy-one Penn State student-athletes are scheduled to graduate during commencement exercises this weekend on the University Park campus. Student-athletes from 23 of Penn State's 25 varsity sports (men's and women's track and field/cross country are combined) are among the 71 student-athletes that have been approved to graduate. In addition, 14 members of the cheerleading squad and eight members of the Lionettes dance teams are on the approved to graduate list. (more)

Penn State head coach Randy Jepson and junior Miguel Pineda (Galloway, Ohio) were the recipients of prestigious honors at the NCAA/CGA Men's Gymnastics Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening in Columbus, Ohio. Jepson was recognized with the 2011 College Gymnastics Association Honor Coach Award while Pineda earned the NCAA Elite 88 Award. (more)
