Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

A team of MBA students from the Penn State Smeal College of Business bested teams from seven leading business schools to take home first place in the Supply Chain Management Case Competition at Rutgers Business School, held March 30 in Piscataway, N.J. Smeal's team of Mehul Pathak, Raghavan Parthasarathy, Rashmi Sharma, and Yujia Wang beat out teams from Lehigh University, the University of Maryland, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rider University, Rutgers University, and Syracuse University. Taylor, Matusow named 2012 Hetzel Award recipients for leadership

Marcellus Taylor, a senior at Penn State Harrisburg pursing a degree in sociology, and Leah Matusow, a senior majoring in secondary education math in the College of Education, have been named recipients of the 2012 Ralph Dorn Hetzel Memorial Award. Named for Penn State's 10th president, the Hetzel Award recognizes a combination of high scholastic attainment together with good citizenship, and participation and leadership in student activities. Swimmer Erin Thomas and gymnast Miguel Pineda have been selected as the 2012 recipients of the Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award.The McCoy Award is presented annually to one senior male and one senior female student-athlete who have combined successful athletic participation with academic excellence. The award is named for the longtime dean of Penn State's College of Physical Education, who also served as the University's athletic director. (more)

Shruthi Baskaran, a senior majoring in civil engineering, and Rachel Dzombak, a senior majoring in bioengineering, both in the College of Engineering, have been awarded the 2012 W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Award. Baskaran and Dzombak are honored as co-recipients of the undergraduate award. The award recognizes undergraduate students who have contributed significantly to the advancement of the international mission of the University. It is named in honor of the late deputy vice president for international programs. (more)

Jinghua Liu, a junior finance and accounting major at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College and Jeremy LaMaster, a senior majoring in women's studies in the College of the Liberal Arts and biology in the Eberly College of Science, are co-recipients of the 2012 Jackson Lethbridge Tolerance Award. The award recognizes a junior, senior or graduate student for outstanding efforts to enhance the understanding of diverse cultures and create a community where all individuals are accepted and valued equally. The award is name for its benefactor, a Penn State alumnus. (more)

Five Penn State students in their respective areas of leadership have been honored with the 2012 John W. Oswald Award. Natalie Ettl is the recipient in the field of athletics; Adam Fracassi, journalism; James Baker, creative/performing arts; Erin Collins, representing scholarship; and Peter Khoury, social services. The John W. Oswald Award, established in 1983, annually recognizes graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at least one of several areas of activity at the University. The award consists of a medallion honoring John W. Oswald, president of the University from 1970 to 1983. (more)

Ce Zhang, a senior majoring in biology in the Eberly College of Science, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Eric A. Walker Award. The award is presented annually to the student who has contributed most to enhancing the reputation of the University through extracurricular activities. University honors 10 students with Martin Outstanding Teaching Awards

Ten Penn State graduate students have been recognized with the 2012 Harold F. Martin Graduate Assistant Outstanding Teaching Awards. The award recipients are Serge Ballif, mathematics; Brandy Brown, French; Aaron Heresco, mass communications; Nicole Laliberte, geography; Gregory Lankenau, geography; Alexandra Nutter-Smith, mass communications; Sara Roser-Jones, kinesiology; Sarah Salter, English; Christopher Schulte, art education; and April Woolnough, crime, law and justice. The Office of the Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School and the Office of the Vice President and Dean for Undergraduate Education co-sponsor the awards to recognize excellence in teaching by graduate students. Recipients must have served as a graduate assistant for at least two semesters within the last two years. The award is named for Harold F. Martin, who earned his doctoral degree in education in 1954 and retired as a director in the Pennsylvania Department of Education. (more)
