A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Holden announces $1.46 million grant for primary care training

Congressman Tim Holden today announced the allocation of $1.46 million in stimulus funds, through Health and Human Services workforce grants, to Penn State College of Medicine for a redesign of the third-year medical school curriculum to incorporate training around the concept of a patient-centered medical home. The medical home model is gaining momentum nationally as an important new health care delivery model, as a growing number of demonstration projects show it has the potential to improve health outcomes and decrease medical costs. More than $99 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding was awarded today (Feb. 18) to the Keystone Initiative for Network-Based Education and Research (KINBER). Penn State is a founding member of KINBER, a coalition of Pennsylvania colleges and universities, research and healthcare organizations and economic development entities. The award will help fund the construction and management of the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network (PennREN), a robust, statewide broadband education and research network. (more)

The potential effects of climate change on the spread of infectious diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, are the focus of a nearly $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation intended to further the studies of a Penn State-led group of researchers. Penn State has launched a new Web site as part of its ongoing efforts to inform citizens about how federal economic stimulus funds are supporting research across the University. To date, Penn State has received more than $71 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), aimed at creating and retaining jobs, and making sure the nation has the human and technological resources for long-term economic and scientific growth. In a June 29 letter to the U.S. Department of Education, Penn State President Graham Spanier has urged federal officials to carefully review the Commonwealth's application for education-related stimulus funding. The application, submitted by Gov. Ed Rendell, indicates that Pennsylvania's four state-related institutions, including Penn State, are not public universities -- contrary to their missions and history of state support. (more)

In introducing a new round of potential state budget cuts for 2009-10, Gov. Ed Rendell proposed last week what could be devastating cuts in the Commonwealth's appropriation to Penn State. The governor's proposed reductions would set the University back to its appropriation level in 1996. Penn State would go from the current year's initial appropriation of $338 million to $278 million in 2009-10. (more)
