Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will hold its spring commencement beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, in the Louis J. Tullio Arena, located at Eighth and French streets in downtown Erie. This year, the college will be honoring its oldest graduates along with its newest. (more)

Penn State expects to award approximately 10,875 diplomas in May 2009 to students University-wide, bringing Penn State's alumni total to almost 643,000.

Through the end of the fall 2008 semester, Penn State has conferred a total of 631,150 degrees. As of May 18 the University's total number of graduates should approach 643,000. This spring Penn State expects to award approximately 10,875 diplomas to students University-wide who are completing 588 associate, 8,627 baccalaureate, 1,083 master's, 131 medical, 212 law and 234 doctoral degrees. Through the end of the fall 2007 semester, Penn State has conferred a total of 614,357 degrees. As of May 18 the University's total number of graduates should approach 625,000, as the University's 24 campuses hold commencement ceremonies and host keynote speakers.
