Two senior journalism majors contributing coverage for the NCAA and a recent graduate completing an exclusive internship will give Penn State an important presence at the Final Four this week in New Orleans. The hands-on opportunities were made possible in large part by the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State. Through an agreement with the NCAA, Audrey Snyder of Downingtown, Pa., and Casey Kelley of Maplewood, Minn., will provide a variety of stories about all aspects of the Final Four. Their work will appear on the NCAA's website, and the Curley Center has launched "Final Four Focus" -- a news blog that will carry the students' stories for the NCAA as well as additional stories they write from New Orleans. When sports stories become linked with other social and business issues, professional journalists tend to offer deeper and broader coverage than sports bloggers, according to Penn State researchers. In a study of the way mainstream columnists and popular bloggers covered conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's involvement in a partnership attempting to buy a professional football team, the researchers showed that journalists were more likely to include issues such as race and business in their columns, said Marie Hardin, associate director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism in the College of Communications. ESPN taping with Paterno, Krzyzewski set for June 20 at Penn State

A unique event -- the taping of an ESPN special featuring Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski -- will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 20, before a live, invitation-only audience in Eisenhower Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus. Ten days after the taping, an hourlong show titled "Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno and Krzyzewski" will appear at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, on ESPN. The taped program will continue at 9 p.m. on ESPNU, featuring student questions for the legendary coaches. (more)

Five Penn State journalism students -- the most from any school in the country -- were selected for internships with MLB.com this summer, marking the second consecutive year the University will have the most interns participating in the program. Their selection marks the fourth year in a row students from the College of Communications have been selected for the program.
