A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

O'Brien, staff to lead football camps starting June 2

Head coach Bill O'Brien and the Penn State football staff will welcome high school players from across the nation to the Nittany Lions' 38th annual summer football camps, which get under way Saturday, June 2. Penn State will offer five football camp opportunities in June, including two advanced skills camps, in addition to position, youth and kicking camps. The Nittany Lions' coaching staff will be joined by some of the nation's best high school and college coaches to provide professional instruction during the camps. (more)

Senior Joe Kovacs (Nazareth, Pa.), junior Casimir Loxsom (New Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Brady Gehret (Altoona, Pa.) claimed individual titles, while the quartet of Aaron Nadolsky (Altoona, Pa.), Loxsom, Gehret, and Brandon Bennett-Green (Elkins Park, Pa.) took top honors in the 4x400-meter relay to wrap up a stellar weekend of action, Sunday at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at McClimon Track. The Nittany Lions will continue their postseason drive in the coming weeks, traveling to the NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round at the University of North Florida, May 24-26. (more)

Penn State will clash with Big Ten Conference foes Iowa and Ohio State in prime time during the 2012 season. The Nittany Lions will be playing at least one regular season night game for the 13th consecutive season. Coach Bill O'Brien's Nittany Lions will visit the Hawkeyes on Oct. 20, with kick set for BTN at 8 p.m. ET in Kinnick Stadium. Penn State will host border rival Ohio State on Oct. 27 for a 6 p.m kick in Beaver Stadium on ESPN or ESPN2. (more)

April is Youth Sports Safety Month. Each year, more than 3.5 million children under the age of 15 are treated for sports injuries nationwide. Roughly half of these injuries are sustained in solo activities, while approximately one out of four participants in youth soccer, football or baseball has been injured at least once.

In team sports, most injuries occur during practices, not games. Parents should insist that kids wear the same protective gear, do the same warm-ups, and take all the same precautions when they practice as when they're getting ready for a game. (more)

The Nittany Lion Club and the Penn State Alumni Association will team up to provide fans the chance to meet and hear from some of the leaders of Penn State Athletics this spring when the Penn State Coaches Caravan hits the road for destinations across Nittany Nation, encompassing seven states and Washington, D.C. Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien will headline the bus tour of many Penn State alumni strongholds across Pennsylvania, Ohio and the East Coast. He will be joined at various stops by Penn State Lady Lion basketball coach Coquese Washington and several other Penn State head coaches. (more)

Penn State York will honor its student athletes at the 41st annual Athletic Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 19. The banquet will take place at Heritage Hills Golf Resort & Conference Center, 2700 Mt. Rose Ave., York, Pa. Scholar athletes, outstanding players and a variety of other awards will be presented following a 6 p.m. dinner. Award recipients and coaches attend the banquet at no charge. (more)
