Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Security Magazine, a publication for those who manage enterprise risk and security, has recognized Penn State President Graham B. Spanier as Security Executive of the Year. Bicyclists reminded to register, secure bikes and follow traffic laws

In addition to outdoor bike racks, some on-campus residents can secure their bicycles in residence hall bike storage rooms.

Bicycle thefts are on the rise at University Park. Bikes reported as stolen to University Police have risen from 103 in 2008 to 126 in 2009 to 140 through mid-October 2010. University Police and Transportation Services would like to remind bike riders of several security and safety measures they should take while on campus. (more)

Work by researchers at the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute will focus on developing anti-terrorist barriers for use in America's overseas facilities such as embassies.

New fire alarms, elevator phones to improve security

In efforts that will increase security and emergency response capabilities on the University Park campus, Penn State's Office of Physical Plant is in the process of replacing outdated fire alarms and installing emergency elevator phones in buildings across campus, the University's Board of Trustees learned Friday (Sept. 17). University Police to conduct emergency training May 11-13

As part of its efforts for preparedness in a wide range of potential campus security issues, Penn State's University Police will be conducting an emergency response exercise from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday (May 11) through Thursday (May 13) in and around the Business Building on the University Park campus. Members of the community should not be alarmed by the police activity and simulated security exercises in the area. The effort is being filmed by Penn State Public Broadcasting for future training purposes. (more)

Beware of phishing scams and holiday spam

Fraudulent e-mails that appear to be coming from University locations such as administrator@psu.edu, webmail@psu.edu and helpdesk@psu.edu continue to be sent to Penn State faculty, staff and students. These e-mails, which ask recipients to provide their individual user ID and password, are part of a variety of dangerous phishing scams, which have targeted all colleges and universities since 2008. The e-mail messages are NOT sent by administrative offices at Penn State. Do not reply to these messages, as they are not legitimate and could lead to the compromise of your access account, your computer or your data. ITS strongly recommends that the messages be deleted. Anyone who already has replied to one of these fraudulent messages should contact Security Operations and Services (SOS) at 814-863-9533. (more)

Reception to highlight Strategic and Global Security Program

Students and faculty from all disciplines are invited to attend a reception on Dec. 9, to learn about opportunities available with Penn State's Strategic and Global Security Program, part of the University's designation as an Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence. The reception will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. in Reese's Cafe, located on the second floor of the IST Building. Interested faculty and students can learn more about funding opportunities, research partnerships and internships with federal intelligence organizations. (more)

Security more thorough at Beaver Stadium, fans asked to arrive early

Due to the Department of Homeland Security alerts issued Monday (Sept. 21) to stadiums, hotels and other venues, Penn State wants fans to know that security measures will be enhanced for the remainder of the football season. Penn State Athletics is asking fans to come to the Beaver Stadium gates at least 30 minutes earlier than usual in order to be in their seats by kick off. (more)
