Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

New set of faculty trading cards introduced

Penn State has just introduced its third annual series of faculty trading cards, and already they're on their way to becoming collectors' items, having been requested for the archives of the Trading Card Museum, a popular Web site built by and for trading card enthusiasts, artists, dealers and producers. This year's set follows the pattern of the 2007 and 2008 sets by profiling 10 contemporary and historical Penn State faculty who have earned distinction through their research and scholarly activities. Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center researchers are looking for people who want to lose weight for a research study. Volunteers are needed to test a new weight loss Web site, with participation including two office visits and weekly use of a Web-based computer application. Compensation is provided. (more)
