A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State Beaver held its spring commencement Friday, May 4 in the Student Union Building auditorium. Fifty-eight students received master's, baccalaureate, and associate degrees. The academic processional and recessional and convention of proceedings were led by Daniel W. Smith, instructor in business. Donna J. Kuga, director of academic affairs, presented the degrees, which were conferred by Chancellor Gary B. Keefer in conjunction with John Feraco, president of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and manufacturing leader for NOVA Chemicals, Inc. Keefer also introduced the commencement speaker, Julian Gray, certified elder law attorney. (more)

A psychologist who researches spatial cognition will be the next presenter in Penn State Behrend's Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior.

Christopher Niebauer, associate professor of psychology at Slippery Rock University, will discuss "Handedness and the Left Brain Interpreter: From Creationism to the Sense of Self" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, in the second-floor auditorium of the Reed Union Building at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. A social psychologist who studies stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination within the context of the criminal justice system will be the next speaker in the Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Jennifer Hunt of Buffalo State University will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at Penn State Behrend, in the Reed Auditorium, located on the second floor of the Reed Union Building. Penn State Beaver has announced four faculty and staff appointments effective for the spring semester. Ana Beatriz Areas da Luz Fontes was named assistant professor of psychology, and Tiffany L. MacQuarrie was appointed instructor in English. Barbara Jean Bertges has been named assistant athletic director, and Anthony W. Budris is the new police services supervisor. (more)

"Psychological Dimensions of Nationalism and Conflict" will be the topic of the next Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior presentation at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

Joshua Searle-White, chair of the psychology department at Allegheny College, will discuss why, from a psychological point of view, nationalist conflicts continue despite the best efforts of multiple generations of diplomats and conflict-resolution specialists. His presentation takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Reed Auditorium, located on the second floor of Penn State Behrend's Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public. A new Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior debuts at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College this month.

The first topic of the new series will be gender essentialism. Clare Conry-Murray, assistant professor of psychology at Penn State Beaver, will discuss "Children's Reasoning About Gender Equity" at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the Samuel P. "Pat" Black III Conference Center, which is located on the first floor of the Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center. Parking will be available in the deck behind the Burke Center, off Technology Drive. (more)
