Penn State Beaver held its spring commencement Friday, May 4 in the Student Union Building auditorium. Fifty-eight students received master's, baccalaureate, and associate degrees. The academic processional and recessional and convention of proceedings were led by Daniel W. Smith, instructor in business. Donna J. Kuga, director of academic affairs, presented the degrees, which were conferred by Chancellor Gary B. Keefer in conjunction with John Feraco, president of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and manufacturing leader for NOVA Chemicals, Inc. Keefer also introduced the commencement speaker, Julian Gray, certified elder law attorney. (more)

Penn State Beaver has announced four faculty and staff appointments effective for the spring semester. Ana Beatriz Areas da Luz Fontes was named assistant professor of psychology, and Tiffany L. MacQuarrie was appointed instructor in English. Barbara Jean Bertges has been named assistant athletic director, and Anthony W. Budris is the new police services supervisor. (more)

Hall, professor of psychology at Northeastern University, will argue that our ability to draw correct inferences about emotion, intention, personality and truthfulness directly impacts our work and home lives. Kevin Bennett, instructor in psychology at Penn State Beaver, will present "Science, Perception and Reality: What Do Sensory Illusions Tell Us About the Mind?," from noon to 12:50 p.m., Monday, Oct. 3, in Room 16 of the Student Union Building. The first topic of the new series will be gender essentialism. Clare Conry-Murray, assistant professor of psychology at Penn State Beaver, will discuss "Children's Reasoning About Gender Equity" at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the Samuel P. "Pat" Black III Conference Center, which is located on the first floor of the Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center.
