Reacting to sagging populations of bees and other pollinators, members of Gov. Tom Corbett's staff recently sought and received Penn State Extension certification for the gardens at the Governor's Residence as "pollinator friendly."

Many homeowners live in envy of those neighbors who seem able to turn a few trees, flowers and even rocks into an inviting outdoor scene. But you, too, can do it by following a few basic guidelines, according to a horticulturist in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. New or veteran homeowners hoping to enhance the look of their properties can use sustainable practices to express creativity, create habitat for wildlife and define special-use areas with year-round interest, said James Sellmer, associate professor of ornamental horticulture. Fruits and nuts are high-value crops in the Mid-Atlantic states and are being heavily impacted by honeybee shortages for pollination. A new $1.4 million grant from the USDA NIFA Specialty Crops Research Initiative (SCRI) program to Penn State will look into future impacts on fruit pollination and the development of alternative pollinators to supplement honeybees. In the last several years, beekeepers across the country have seen the overall number of pollinator bee colonies drop dramatically. By each winter's end, about three out of every 10 colonies die out. Penn State experts gathered colleagues from around the world to try to figure out what is causing the death and disappearance of honeybees and other pollinators and ultimately threatens the vitality of much of our nation's food supply. Registration is open for the first International Conference on Pollinator Biology, Heath and Policy, being hosted by the Penn State Center for Pollinator Research from July 24 to 28, on Penn State's University Park campus. According to Christina Grozinger, associate professor of entomology and director of the center, the focus of the conference will be current research on pollinator biology and health, as well as policies related to pollinator conservation. Gardening enthusiasts attending Penn State's Ag Progress Days, Aug. 19-21, can learn from the masters. Penn State Master Gardeners will be on hand at the Lawn and Garden Tent to provide information on a wide range of green-thumb topics. "Each year brings a new wave of landscape questions and concerns," said Ginger Pryor, extension associate in horticulture and state Master Gardener coordinator. "Master Gardeners are prepared with information about local growing conditions to give them insights into this year's hot topics." (more)
