Penn State York is one of the stops when the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) goes on the road with Congressional town hall meetings to several college campuses to gauge reaction during the last week before the state primary on April 24.
Starting Monday, April 16, PCN will pre-empt the "PCN Call-In" program to air live Congressional town hall meetings hosted at universities and colleges across the state beginning at 7 p.m. for the entire week. The Penn State York campus will be featured on Friday, April 20. (more)
Despite Pennsylvania's celebrated role as the birthplace of American democracy, the Commonwealth ranked next-to-last among U.S. states in the percentage of residents who said they "talked frequently about politics," in the recently published 2011 Pennsylvania Civic Health Index. Its authors, J. Michael Hogan and Mark Hlavacik of Penn State's Center for Democratic Deliberation, examined a number of measures of social connectedness, community engagement and political deliberation and action, based on data gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau. The Penn State College Democrats are sponsoring a visit by Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The exact location of the rally has not yet been finalized. Doors open at noon for the Moving America Forward Rally, which starts at 1:30 p.m. The rally is part of a push by Democrats to excite young voters as the November election nears. The rally is free and open to the public. For security reasons, attendees are asked to avoid bringing bags to the event. No tickets are required, and admittance will be on a first-come, first-served basis. (more)
Although politicians are often criticized for making empty promises, when it comes to their voting records, their words may carry more weight than previously thought, according to findings by two Penn State information technology scientists. The researchers used a computer model to compare voting records from the 110th Congress -- Jan. 3, 2007 to Jan. 3, 2009 -- to each senator's floor statements on the issues to determine whether the two matched up.
