Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Robin Becker, professor of English and women's studies in the College of the Liberal Arts and a nationally acclaimed poet, has been named the 2010-11 Penn State laureate. Becker is the third Penn State laureate, a full-time University faculty member in the humanities or fine arts who is assigned half-time for one academic year to bring an enhanced level of social, cultural, artistic and human perspective and awareness to a broad array of audiences. Robin Becker, professor of English and women's studies, is featured on the cover of the November/December issue of The American Poetry Review. Several of Becker's poems are published in the printed issue as well. Becker is the author of five collections of poems including The Horse Fair and Venetian Blue. Julia Kasdorf, a nationally recognized poet and associate professor of English at Penn State, has received a 2009 creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts to complete her current manuscript of poems, "Poetry in America." A faculty member in the College of the Liberal Arts, she is a poet and writer with strong interests in religion, culture and the relationship between writers and communities. (more)
