Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State Outreach honored two educational leaders who are both pioneers in online education and supporters of Outreach.
Dr. Frank Mayadas, a program director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Dr. Gary Miller, the first executive director of Penn State World Campus, were honored at a ceremony during the Penn State Outreach Appreciation Dinner on Sept. 17.

Retired World Campus director receives lifetime achievement award

The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) has awarded the 2009 Prize of Excellence for Lifetime Contributions to the Field to former Associate Vice President for Outreach Gary E. Miller. ICDE, recognized by the United Nations, is a global network of distance and online education institutions. The council promotes intercultural co-operation and understanding through flexible and online learning throughout the world. Miller, who retired in 2007 after more than 30 years of service, is executive director emeritus for the Penn State World Campus.

World Campus Student Fund adds financial help in hard economic times

When economic clouds darken, the cost of education becomes harder to justify for adult students, even though continuing their education is crucial to accessing new economic opportunities. To help meet those financial challenges, the Penn State World Campus staff created the World Campus Student Fund, a fund that provides aid for students in financial need. (more)
