As the nation marks National Military Appreciation Month in May, Penn State is reporting 40 percent growth in enrollments of active-duty military and veteran students in Penn State's World Campus for 2011, or 14 percent of all online enrollments. The next episode of "World on Trial", an international human rights public television and Web-based interactive series produced by Penn State University Dickinson School of Law, the School of International Affairs and WPSU, will examine the legality of the use of unmanned drones by the U.S. government to target suspected terrorists. The Penn State community was saddened to learn of the loss of one of its own recently. Maj. Sam Griffith, a 1997 alumnus, was killed in the line of duty Dec. 14, while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. (more)
Penn State adult learner Nicole Bianchi studied online in public libraries between her husband's Minor League baseball games. Lt. Michael Choe, a U.S. Navy pilot, and his wife Amanda Choe juggled the challenges of military life to complete their degrees online. They and other adult students who earned their degrees at University Park campus and online through the World Campus will be honored at a Penn State Outreach graduation celebration. (more)
More than 3,100 veteran and active-duty military students are using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to earn degrees at Penn State as of spring 2011, a 21 percent increase over last year. As more troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, this enrollment trend is likely to continue. To help faculty and staff who work with these students better understand and support their needs, a University-wide team has created five Best Practices in the Recruitment and Retention of Student Veterans programs. More military veterans and active-duty military members are choosing Penn State as their education provider. As of spring 2011, there were 3,166 students using their Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits throughout the University system -- an increase of 21 percent over 2010. With the planned drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number of these students will likely continue to increase at all Penn State campuses. A series of free professional development webinars, developed by a University-wide team in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Center, is being offered to staff members who assist these students with admissions, advising, financial aid, outreach, psychological and disabilities services. G.I. Jobs magazine has designated Penn State a military-friendly school for 2012. It is the third straight time the Pittsburgh-based publication has recognized the University's programs and services designed specifically to help active-duty military service-members and veterans pursue an education online through Penn State's World Campus.
