Nancy Woods, executive director of Adult Literacy Action at Penn State Beaver, is a recipient of a 2011 Jefferson Award for Public Service. She was recently honored at a reception in Pittsburgh where she received the bronze Jefferson Award medallion commissioned by the Franklin Mint. Known as the "Nobel Prize for volunteerism," the Jefferson Awards honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service. (more)

Registration is now open for the 2011 Diverse Literacies Conference, presented by Penn State Lehigh Valley and the Lehigh Valley Writing Project. The conference, with its theme of "Developing New Literacies: Capitalizing on Diverse Learners' Experiences," will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Bear Creek Mountain Resort and Conference Center in Macungie, Pa. The keynote speakers for the conference are David Freeman, professor of reading and English as a second language, and Yvonne Freeman, professor of bilingual education, both at the University of Texas. Two Web sites launched by members of the Penn State faculty aim to support the development of language and communication skills in children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other disabilities. The focus of each site is on children with complex communication challenges who would benefit from augmentative and alternative communication, which is the term for the various tools and approaches used to enhance communication. Penn State College of Education students are taking part in an international cause aimed at improving the literacy of students in the African nation of Swaziland. They are collecting used books in support of the African Book Project, a not-for-profit organization headquartered in New Orleans. The project provides much-needed reading materials to children around the world. (more)

Women enrolled in family literacy programs benefit in meaningful psychosocial ways above and beyond the academic and vocational skills they receive. A new study out of Penn State's College of Education indicates that literacy programs provide low-income women a space for supportive interactions that enhance their well-being. (more)

Carol Scheffner Hammer, associate professor of communication sciences and disorders in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development, was recently awarded a $500,000 Head Start-University Partnership Grant that studies the efficacy of a bilingual school-readiness program called Madres educando a sus ninos/Mothers Educating Their Children, a book-reading program that engages mothers through the Hispanic culture.
