Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

David A. Blizard, senior research associate in Penn State's Department of Biobehavioral Health, was presented the Dobzhansky Memorial Award from the Behavior Genetics Association at its 39th Annual Meeting held in Minneapolis, Minn., in June. The award, known to the international association as the "Doby," is awarded to a member for a lifetime of outstanding scholarship and achievement in behavioral genetic analysis. (more)

Nursing professor receives lifetime achievement award

Mona Counts, Elouise Ross Eberly Professor in the School of Nursing, was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Retail Clinician, Drug Store News and the Convenient Care Association. The award honors nurse practitioners "who go above and beyond the call of duty to achieve excellence in patient care" over a lifetime.
Counts, only the second person to receive this honor, received her award at the Retail Clinician Education Congress, held Aug. 3-5 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin in Orlando, Fla. Counts was also the keynote speaker at the conference; her presentation addressed the future of nurse practitioners. (more)
