The reality of urbanization and industrialization is leaving a mark on an important life-sustaining resource -- water -- especially in China. Students from Penn State University and China's Jiangnan University recently addressed the problem head-on, undertaking field research on the shores of Lake Taihu, China's third largest fresh water lake, from May 14-31. While there, they studied the effects of industrial, municipal and urban development within Jiangsu Province- -- one of the most industrialized regions in China -- and offered strategic suggestions for the lake's restoration. James Wines, professor of architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State, has been awarded the Premio di Architettura ANCE, an annual honor presented to an international architect by Associazione Nazionale Construttori Edili (National Association of Builders in Italy). (more)

Roughly 20 Penn State students, most from the Lehigh Valley campus, depart on Thursday, May 19 for a short-term study abroad experience in Beijing, China (see previous story, "Faculty collaborate to create global citizens"). Led by two Penn State Lehigh Valley professors, the students will spend two weeks studying communication and business topics at the Capitol University of Economics and Business, as well as tour some of the historical and cultural highlights of the emerging world power. While there, one Lehigh Valley student, D. Samuel Greene, will blog about his and fellow classmates' experience. (more)

The College of Agricultural Sciences and the College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State will sponsor a two-day symposium examining the science and culture of Ukraine, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 on Penn State's University Park campus. "Diverse Landscapes of Ukraine: A Celebration of 20 Years of Independence" will assemble speakers from universities in the United States, Ukraine and from around the world to address seminal topics in agriculture, environmental resources, language and culture. In March 2011, students from two classes were offered an alternative spring break experience in Costa Rica. A reflective research project following their experience abroad also was required to complete the class. Three of the students who took part were inspired by what they learned about fair trade practices in Costa Rica and have organized a Fair Trade Awareness event from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on April 18, in room 135 at the campus in Center Valley. Two faculty members from Penn State Lehigh Valley have combined their efforts to offer students a short-term study abroad experience in China as well as credit for the courses taken in conjunction with the opportunity. This collaboration is an example of how many Penn State faculty across varied academic disciplines are collaborating to foster the global perspective students need to be competitive after graduation. Khanjan Mehta, senior research associate in the electronic and computer services department and affiliate faculty member in the School of Engineering Design, Technology and Professional Programs, will speak at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in 113 Information Sciences and Technology Building on Penn State's University Park campus. Mehta is the keynote speaker of this year's International Education Week, Nov. 15-19, and his presentation will kick off the week. (more)
