The digital corporation Gigabit Squared on Wednesday (May 23) unveiled its Neighborhood Gateway Program, an initiative that will provide $200 million in funding for up to six Gigabit University (Gig.U) member institutions. Gig.U is a nationwide consortium of universities and communities working toward the development of ultra high-speed networks for leading U.S. universities and their local communities. As a key partner in the Gig.U initiative, Penn State and its surrounding communities will be considered in the competitive process for Gateway Program funding. Winning communities will be selected between November and the first quarter of 2013. (more)
The ability for computer technology to automatically create a society of smart, tolerant citizens may be more hype and hope than reality, according to a Penn State Altoona researcher.
"We have to rethink some of our most common assumptions about modern life and, specifically, we need to rethink assumptions that the information age will naturally lead to a society that is intelligent and scientifically literate," said Shaheed Nick Mohammed, associate professor of communications. Penn State's Eberly College of Science and the College of the Liberal Arts have announced an anonymous commitment from an alumnus. Valued at a total of $200,000, it will provide funds to support the information technology requirements of faculty in each college. The endowment, which will come from the donor's estate, is intended to enhance greater teaching and research by dedicated faculty in fields ranging from physics and biology to humanities and social sciences. Penn State, The Lancaster Center is offering a new credit certificate for spring in Information Sciences and Technology (IST). An information sessions are set for 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the center located at 1383 Arcadia Road (Farm and Home Center), Lancaster. The event is free and open to the public.
This certificate focuses on technology topics that are critically important to employers in the workplace today. Designed with the adult student in mind, this 13-credit certificate offers an excellent way to begin or resume a college education and is an important credential to add to a resume. Credits earned in the certificate can also be applied toward a degree. Courses in the certificate are offered on Saturdays and begin in January 2012. (more)
Nicholas Pentz has been named computer systems specialist in Penn State Beaver's Office of Information Technology. The position requires a broad range of skills, including knowledge and experience with personal computers, hardware and software, audiovisual and media systems, and procurement and budgeting. Additionally, he is qualified to work in a variety of operating systems, software, Microsoft applications, computer languages, and conferencing technology.
