Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--Students enrolled in the iMBA program at Penn State's World Campus scored in the top 5 percent on the most recent Educational Testing Service (ETS) Master of Business Administration (MBA) Major Field Test, a comprehensive national assessment for program evaluation.

The fall 2009 cohort of 50 students in this online program collectively scored in the 95th percentile in 2011, placing the Penn State iMBA program in the highest possible category, of 225 institutions administering this test to more than 4,700 students nationwide. (more)

Penn State adult learner Nicole Bianchi studied online in public libraries between her husband's Minor League baseball games. Lt. Michael Choe, a U.S. Navy pilot, and his wife Amanda Choe juggled the challenges of military life to complete their degrees online. They and other adult students who earned their degrees at University Park campus and online through the World Campus will be honored at a Penn State Outreach graduation celebration. (more)

Penn State's online campus, the World Campus, is the No. 1 online institution for 2011, and the University's portfolio of online information sciences and technology degrees also is No. 1 nationally among information technology (IT) degrees, according to The Best Colleges. A third online program, the MBA program (iMBA), ranks No. 9 among the 25 Best Online MBA Degree Programs. The Best Colleges produces independent evaluations of colleges and universities to aid prospective students. World Campus leads the Top 25 Online Colleges and Universities list, while Penn State's associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in information sciences and technology put the University in first place in the Top 10 Best Colleges for Online Information Technology Degrees list. Diane Parente and Janet Duck, iMBA faculty members, jointly won the Outstanding Faculty Award from the iMBA students in August. This award is given to those faculty members who excel in online teaching in various dimensions such as quantity of learning, course content and presentation, and course interaction. Parente has won this award many times, and the graduating class of 2009 also chose her as one of the best teachers. (more)
