Research Unplugged, the popular Penn State speaker series that brings University researchers into the community for lively public discussions, launches its spring season on March 15. The series begins its eighth year on a new time and day -- 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Thursdays -- and in a new location -- Schlow Centre Region Library's Downsbrough Community Room, downtown State College, Pa. Schlow Library joins Penn State's Office of the Vice President for Research and Office of University Relations as a partner in the Research Unplugged series. The events are free and open to all, with complimentary light refreshments. (more)

Robert Szymczak, associate professor of history at Penn State Beaver, was a featured speaker this month in the lecture series presented by the S. A. Blejwas Endowed Chair in Polish Studies at Central Connecticut State University. His topic was "Katyn and the Politics of Massacre." He is the author of numerous publications, including "Cold War Crusader: Arthur Bliss Lane and the Private Committee to Investigate the Katyn Massacre, 1949-1952," which appeared in Polish American Studies: A Journal of Polish American History and Culture and "The Vindication of Memory: The Katyn Case in the West, Poland, and Russia, 1952-2008" which was published in The Polish Review by The Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America. Szymczak is the recipient of Penn State's prestigious George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board Excellence in Research Award, and a three-time recipient of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board Excellence in Teaching Award. The Nittany Lion Inn turns 80 years old today (May 6). When the inn opened in 1930 with 75 rooms, there were only 4,000 students at the Pennsylvania State College. York City Mayor to visit campus during Women's History Month

City of York Mayor C. Kim Bracey will speak at Penn State York on March 29.

Mayor C. Kim Bracey, the first African-American mayor of the City of York, will visit Penn State York on Tuesday, March 29 in celebration of Women's History Month. She will have lunch with members of the campus community beginning at 11:30 a.m. and then speak about the City of York and Women's History Month beginning about noon. This portion of the program is open to the public. Bracey's visit is sponsored by the Penn State York Diversity Committee.

Bracey was elected the first African-American mayor of the City of York on Nov. 3, 2009, and was sworn into office as the 24th mayor on Jan. 4, 2010. She previously served as the appointed director of the department of community development for the City of York from June 2003 until January 2009.

Local radio personality John "Jack" McMullen, who died in 2005, will have his storytelling legacy continued as the Jack McMullen Memorial Radio Production Contest is launched this spring at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus. McMullen was a radio personality, news director, disc jockey and play-by-play announcer for nearly 50 years on local radio stations. (more)
