A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State will host a high-level delegation of invited researchers and administrators from the U.S. and India Oct. 10-11, 2011, to create a network of scholars and policy makers that can serve as a think-tank for discussing opportunities and challenges associated with higher education in India. "We expect that this inaugural conference will also contribute to establishing and strengthening relationships and friendships between academic communities in the U.S. and in India, and of course with Penn State," said Michael Adewumi, vice provost for Global Programs and leader of the Global Engagement Network strategy. Five major issues are challenging America's land-grant universities, according to Penn State President Graham Spanier and echoed by conference leaders and presenters at The Legacy and the Promise: 150 Years of Land-Grant Universities, which concluded June 24 at Penn State. As land-grant institutions review their collective history to prepare for the 150th anniversary in 2012 of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act, they also address questions of weakening state support as well as varying interpretations of the land-grant mission. American land-grant colleges and universities -- beneficiaries of the federal Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862 -- are turning their attention to the transformational legislation as its 150th anniversary approaches in 2012. Penn State is initiating the conversation June 22-24 by hosting a national conference focused on land-grant universities' history and impact. (more)

A State College couple has pledged $50,000 to create an endowment in the College of Education. The John and Gina Ikenberry Endowment for Student Support in Higher Education will support research and travel for graduate students pursuing a doctorate degree in higher education. (more)

Although students have come to expect the flexibility, convenience, and specialization of online learning, said Gary E. Miller, former executive director of Penn State's World Campus, attending classes on campus is not going away. The college experience now often includes many elements: study abroad, internships and online education. Like all institutions, universities grow and change, and Miller sees that process continuing. Penn State's College of Education and its graduate programs continue to earn high rankings, as shown in the latest national rankings of graduate programs released on April 15 by US News & World Report. All of the College's graduate programs appear at least in the top 20 of their respective program rankings, with six programs in the top 10. The College's Higher Education program was ranked first for the third time in four years. (more)
