Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Hundreds of Penn State Beaver students, faculty and staff attended the Fall Health Fair held Nov. 30 in the Student Union Building. The annual event is designed to provide Penn State students and employees with a variety of health-related information and updates. Representatives from various area health care offices were available to talk with visitors in groups as well as one-on-one. The Health Fair is sponsored by the campus Health Center and the Office of Student Affairs. Health care leadership certificate begins in January

Penn State York is offering a new Health Care Leadership Certificate for spring 2012. The new certificate is designed to meet the educational needs of individuals working full- or part-time in a health care environment who want further information and professional development in health care management.

The certificate is particularly relevant to those trained in professional or technical health care fields who have been promoted, or seek promotion, into a health care managerial or supervisory position. For those who are considering a managerial career in the health care field, but are not yet ready to commit to an associate or baccalaureate program, it is great starting point and credential to earn. Symposium in Hershey to address the business of health care

The Penn State Smeal College of Business and Penn State College of Medicine are hosting a half-day symposium next month in Hershey, Pa., with speakers and panel discussions addressing the business side of health care. "Where Health Care and Business Intersect: Improving Quality/Managing Costs" will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 5 at the Hershey Country Club. (more)

Tables have turned this summer at Mount Nittany Medical Center, as 29 Penn State students coach doctors at their jobs. Doctors are learning from a team of pre-med students how to transition from using handwritten medical records for patient discharges to electronic health records (EHR). Student coaches are stationed around the hospital from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week to help doctors learn EHR software. During downtime students have the opportunity to speak with doctors and nurses about their careers and the student's field of interest. (more)

High school seniors and parents are invited to a three-hour symposium from 1 to 4 p.m. March 13, Lecture Room A, at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. This symposium is designed to help seniors and parents learn more about health care needs and challenges after graduation, including finding new physicians as students graduate from high school and move on to college or go into the work force. Highmark and Geisinger reach accord that benefits Penn State employees

Penn State employees served by Geisinger physicians and services will be able to continue those services with coverage into the new year as part of the University's benefits package. Penn State administrators were notified today (Dec. 16) that an agreement has been reached between the University's health care administrator, Highmark Blue Shield, and the Geisinger Health System. All Geisinger providers will continue to be in the PPOBlue Network. (more)
