The Penn State Coaches Caravan will make six stops at events in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut as the tour enters its second week. Football Coach Bill O'Brien will be joined by Lady Lion basketball coach Coquese Washington, men's golf coach Greg Nye and women's volleyball coach Russ Rose at various stops throughout the week. The Coaches Caravan, presented by the Nittany Lion Club and Penn State Alumni Association, is making 18 stops in seven states and Washington, D.C. O'Brien will be at each event, with 11 other coaches appearing at various stops. (more)
The Penn State Coaches Caravan kicks off April 30 with a lunch event in downtown Philadelphia and an evening reception and program in Delaware County. The Nittany Lion Club and Penn State Alumni Association are teaming up to give fans a chance to meet and hear from football coach Bill O'Brien and other leaders of Penn State Athletics with a bus tour encompassing 18 stops in seven states and Washington, D.C. during the course of three weeks. The first week also includes programs in Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Richmond, Va.; and the Harrisburg-Hershey, Pa. area. (more)
After a two-week break in the spring schedule, the Nittany Lion men's golf team will travel to French Lick, Ind., for the 2012 Big Ten Championship. The three-day, 72-hole tournament will be contested at the 7,152-yard, par-72 Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort, April 27-29. (more)
The Penn State women's golf team will begin postseason play on Friday (April 27) at the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will last until Sunday (April 29), with 18 holes of play each day. Tee times for the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. each day, with the Nittany Lions teeing off at 10 a.m. on day one. (more)
The Alle-Kiksi Society's 13th annual Alumni Golf Scramble is set for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at The Links at Spring Church in Apollo. Co-hosted by Penn State New Kensington, the tournament is open to alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends of Penn State. The $110 entry fee includes dinner, refreshments and awards. Various golf packages are available including foursomes, tee sponsorships and "dinner only." Tee sponsorships are available for $100.
Proceeds benefit the society's endowed scholarship that is awarded annually to New Kensington campus students. Five students were awarded a total of $3,000 for the 2011-12 academic year. Head coach Greg Nye announced that three talented recruits have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Penn State men's golf roster for the 2012-13 season. JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township High School), Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H./Gilford Middle High School) and Geoff Vertales (Cromwell, Conn./ Xavier High School) will be eligible to compete for the Nittany Lions during the 2012 fall season. Head coach Denise St. Pierre of the Penn State women's golf team has announced that Andrew Breon has been named assistant coach. The Spring Mills, Pa., native and local Penns Valley Area High School graduate joins the staff after holding numerous positions at Penn State, including PGA apprentice at the Penn State University Golf Courses. Penn State New Kensington recently unveiled the newest addition to its expanding athletics facilities--an outdoor artificial practice green. Located on the small plateau behind the Athletic Center, the 45' x 20' rectangular green features two holes that provide a variety of short and long putts and an assortment of left and right breaks. An area of natural grass surrounds the green and allows for short-range chips. "During down time between classes or before practice, the players can work on their short games," said Bill Woodard, men's and women's golf coach and alumni and public relations specialist at the campus. "Great benefits are derived from just putting for fifteen minutes. "The construction of the practice facility was funded by a $5,000 gift from the Honkus-Zollinger Charitable Foundation. (more)
Penn State New Kensington sophomore Cody Dinger (West Shamokin) shot a final round 80 Monday to finish runner-up, 79-80-159, at the Penn State University Athletic Conference golf championships at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. Lions sophomore Alex Baker (St. Joseph's) posted an 84 and took third place honors, 76-84-160, in the individual championship. Both players were named to the PSUAC All Conference team. As a team, New Kensington took fourth place in the PSUAC with a two-day total of 684. (more)
