The Penn State Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics will provide special eyeglasses, free of charge, to fireworks fans at the Central PA 4thFest -- a State College Fourth-of-July event featuring patriotic entertainment by local artists, games, rides and, of course, a spectacular fireworks display. Michelle and Kevin Coppola, Penn State graduates who live in the Baltimore area, are the proud owners of Joe Paterno's iconic eyeglasses after they placed the high bid of $9,000. Michelle Coppola secured a high bid of $7,550 in the online auction and then was represented by proxy at the live auction during WPSU's 18th Annual Connoisseur's Dinner and Auction on Saturday. Now that Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno has had cataract surgery, one professor says the iconic eyeglasses up for bid as part of Penn State Public Broadcasting's annual fundraising dinner may be more coveted and worth more money.

The online auction at http://wpsu.org/auction ends Wednesday, Feb. 17 and will culminate during the live auction at WPSU's 18th Annual Connoisseur's Dinner and Auction on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Nittany Lion Inn. (more)

Penn State Public Broadcasting has announced that the 18th Annual Connoisseur's Dinner and Auction, featuring Chef Martin Yan, is sold out. The fundraising event will take place on Feb. 20, at the Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus. WPSU managers say the gala has never been at full capacity this far in advance of the event. (more)

An autographed pair of coach Joe Paterno's iconic dark-rimmed glasses will be awarded to the highest bidder as part of Penn State Public Broadcasting's 18th annual Connoisseur's Dinner and Auction on Feb. 20. This is the first pair of the coach's glasses ever given to a charitable auction. The online auction at http://wpsu.org/conndinner begins Feb. 1, and runs until noon on Feb. 17. The bidding will conclude in a live auction during the Connoisseur's Dinner. The highest online bidder for the spectacles may choose to set a maximum bid which will be proxy-bid by a WPSU representative during the live auction.
