Nearly two-thirds of Pennsylvania is covered by forests, with more than 70 percent of those woodlands privately owned. Recent estimates indicate Pennsylvania has more than 600,000 private forest landowners, representing about one out of every nine households.

To better serve these landowners and advise them about forest conservation, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences has created the Center for Private Forests.

According to the latest assessment, Pennsylvania forests have declined slightly in the last decade as growth in urban areas outpaces farmland abandonment.

A new report on the sustainability of forests in the United States indicates that Pennsylvania forests have declined slightly in the last decade and face a number of threats, according to an expert in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. The USDA Forest Service recently released the second National Report on Sustainable Forests for the United States, and it offers a good look at how Keystone State forests are faring, noted Jim Finley, professor of forest resources. Two years ago, Penn State's School of Forest Resources and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry teamed up to offer a free program to teach youth about forests and the concept of forest stewardship. Since then, more than 5,000 youths have participated.
