Penn State York is offering an Application Completion Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Room 103 (lower level) of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) on campus. Admissions counselors will walk participants through the process, answer questions and offer help in completing the application in time for fall semester admission to Penn State. February is Financial Aid Awareness Month and Penn State York is offering two Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion webinars at noon and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16. The webinars, titled "The Seven Easy Steps to Completing the FAFSA," will teach attendees how to complete the FAFSA. The Penn State Beaver Admissions Office will host a series of events in February that are free and open to prospective students and their families. An Application Workshop will be held 9 a.m. to noon, and a Financial Aid Workshop will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Admissions Office, Student Union Building. The Be a PSU Student for a Day program will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15. Registration is required for the Student for a Day program and is encouraged for the other programs. Penn State Lehigh Valley's student aid office will host two free financial aid workshops for high school students who are considering enrolling in higher education. Students and their parents may attend a workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 or Jan. 19, at the campus in Center Valley. The snow date is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 2. Seating is limited. Applications, deadlines, types of financial aid and more will be discussed during financial aid nights, to take place area high schools and offered by Penn State York. The first financial aid night is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Northeastern High school, 300 High Street, Manchester, Pa. The program is free and open to the public. The program is designed both for students about to graduate from high school and adults who are preparing for a return to the classroom. (more)
Prospective students and their families are invited to attend an Open House beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley, Pa. The program offers information to local high school juniors and seniors considering admission to Penn State, and students who have already been offered admission to the University. Prospective students can learn about the options and opportunities at Penn State, speak with faculty, and interact with students, staff and alumni. A financial aid Q&A session also will be part of the program.

Two Penn State supporters are challenging other alumni and friends to join them in an innovative approach to helping students in need. Through the Microfinance Match Fund, Tom Sharbaugh, a Class of 1973 graduate, and his wife, Kristin Hayes, will provide a two-to-one match, up to a total of $100,000 in matching support, for any gifts to the fund. The fund will be used to make small, low-interest loans to undergraduates facing extraordinary and unexpected challenges in earning their degrees. (more)
Due to the federal and state deficit, budget proposals threaten to reduce financial aid funding for some federal and state grant programs. Penn State could see a potential loss of up to $20 million dollars in grant funding if the proposals currently being debated in Congress are passed. Of course, these same funding cuts will affect all students across the country who depend on grants to help cover educational expenses. Many Penn State undergraduate students receive grant aid -- about 32 percent from federal grants and 20 percent from state grants. (more)
