Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Alessandro Bonanno, assistant professor of agricultural economics in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, has received the 2009 Roy C. Buck Faculty Award in the Agricultural Sciences for his article, "Competition Effects of Supermarket Services." The award recognizes an untenured faculty member in the college for the best article in the social or human sciences to be published in a refereed scholarly journal in the past two years. (more)

The College of Health and Human Development will honor seven of its faculty and staff members at a ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Lisa Grove, Sharon "Chickie" Krimmel, Chalandra Bryant, Gary Fosmire, Robert Turrisi, Linda Caldwell, and A. Catharine Ross will be receiving awards. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Schreyer Honors College honors faculty with teaching, advising awards

The coordinator of an interdepartmental major in the College of Agricultural Sciences and an Eberly College of Science faculty member who has taught the honors General Biochemistry course for more than 20 years were recognized Thursday (Sept. 25) by the Schreyer Honors College during its annual awards ceremony. Lester C. Griel Jr., a professor of veterinary science in the College of Agricultural Sciences, received the 2008 Excellence in Honors Advising Award. Teh-hui Kao, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the Eberly College of Science, was named the recipient of the 2008 Excellence in Honors Teaching Award. Students currently enrolled in the Schreyer Honors College nominate faculty for these awards. (more)

Three Penn State Shenango faculty who were honored for excellence in teaching and service were presented with plaques and cash awards at recent events. Donn Townsend, instructor in general engineering, was awarded the 2008 Leonard R. Riforgiato Memorial Teaching Award; while Dara Sterling, part-time instructor in health and human development, received the 2008 Margaret Cunningham Foley Memorial Teaching Award; and Jim Elder, senior instructor in communication, was awarded the first Penn State Shenango Teaching Service Excellence Award.
