The Penn State Smeal College of Business has presented Terrence Guay, clinical associate professor of international business, with the 2011 Fred Brand Jr. Outstanding Teacher Award, the college's highest honor for teaching. Guay, who has been a member of the Smeal faculty since 2004, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in international business. The Brand award is named for the late Fred Brand Jr., a 1932 Penn State alumnus and insurance executive who enjoyed a 40-year career with Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. (more)
Two research papers by faculty members at the Penn State Smeal College of Business have won 2011 Emerald Citation of Excellence Awards, recognizing them as being among the 50 most outstanding articles published by the top 300 management journals in the world. The award-winning papers are "The Severity of Supply Chain Disruptions: Design Characteristics and Mitigation Capabilities," co-authored by Christopher Craighead, assistant professor of supply chain management, and "It's All About Me: Narcissistic Chief Executive Officers and Their Effects on Company Strategy and Performance," co-authored by Donald Hambrick, Evan Pugh Professor of Management. The Office of the President has put out a call for nominations for individuals eligible to receive the Faculty Scholar Medal, which recognizes scholarly and creative excellence. The medal will be awarded to individuals in the following scholarly areas: arts and humanities; engineering; life and health sciences; physical sciences; and social and behavioral sciences. The final deadline for nominees' submission of materials is Friday, Dec. 10. (more)
The American Council of Learned Societies has recognized four Penn Staters -- two faculty members who have received grants and two recent doctoral student graduates who will serve two-year academic fellowships -- among a total of 380 U.S.-based and international scholars honored in 2010. (more)
Chunshan Song, distinguished professor of fuel science and director of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Energy Institute at Penn State, has received the Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Chemistry. The national award recognizes Song's outstanding contributions to fuel science, especially in clean fuels, catalysis and carbon dioxide capture and conversion research. (more)
Filled with books about American literature and history, Carla Mulford's office is evidence of the passion she has for her research. Her fervency on her latest subject has already proven to be rewarding. Mulford, a Penn State associate professor of English and expert on the subject of Benjamin Franklin, recently was elected as a member of the American Antiquarian Society, which she explained is "a rare honor granted to scholars, public leaders and others whose credentials, expertise and experience meet the high standards set by the Society and its members." The White House announced July 9 that four Penn State researchers will receive 2009 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Sean Hallgren and Adam D. Smith, both assistant professors in computer science and engineering; Michael A. Hickner, assistant professor of material science and engineering; and Susan E. Parks, assistant professor of acoustics and research associate at the University's Applied Research Laboratory, were among 100 named by the White House to receive this highest honor presented to beginning scientists or engineers in the U.S. They will be recognized at a future ceremony at the White House. Elizabeth A. Skowron, associate professor of counseling psychology, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to lecture and conduct research in Ireland next spring. (more)
