Four research teams in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences recently were awarded a total of more than $1.4 million in Conservation Innovation Grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grants will fund research aimed at developing innovative conservation technologies and approaches that address existing and emerging natural-resource issues.

The equine herpes virus may have garnered national attention when it caused the recent cancellation of horse shows across the western United States, but a veterinarian with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences says it's nothing new. Jake Werner, attending veterinarian for agricultural animals and wildlife, notes that proper biosecurity measures can help decrease the occurrence and severity of illnesses. (more)

Responding to new demands on Pennsylvania's equine industry concerning nutrient and manure management on horse farms, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences is surveying the state's horse-farm owners and managers to gauge their understanding of the challenges of pasture development and manure regulation. The Equine Experience at Penn State's Ag Progress Days has a history of offering attractions and activities that educate and entertain horse lovers of all ages and experience levels. Visitors at this year's event, to be held Aug. 18 - 20, will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics through training and breed clinics, demonstrations, informational displays and lectures.
