Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

While Penn State originally was founded to educate farmers, the mission of its College of Agricultural Sciences has expanded to encourage the development of "agripreneurs." That was apparent during the college's recent Harbaugh Entrepreneurship Forum, which brings prominent entrepreneurs to campus to interact with students and share their business acumen. (more)

Angel investors, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs will convene at Penn State on April 20 for the fourth annual Nittany Lion Early Stage Venture Capital Conference. The agenda will include three panel discussions focused on what to expect when starting a business, the importance of intellectual property in valuation, and the role of corporate venture capital in innovation. The conference begins with a breakfast reception at 8 a.m. at the Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus. Smeal's Garber VC fund exits American Education Corp.

With the acquisition of American Education Corp. (AEC) by K12 Inc., the Garber Venture Capital Fund at the Penn State Smeal College of Business has sold its shares of AEC for $764,518.65, with the possibility of additional milestone payments. The Garber Fund is used within a course environment for Smeal MBA students to experience firsthand all aspects of venture capital investment, including deal sourcing, due diligence, term sheet negotiations, closing, monitoring investments, engineering exits, and managing the portfolio. Smeal's Garber Venture Capital Fund invests in Healthy Humans

The master of business administration student-managed Garber Venture Capital Fund at the Penn State Smeal College of Business closed its investment in Healthy Humans LLC, a provider of e-health portals for patients and doctors to improve health outcomes and lower costs, during the spring 2010 semester. The $150,000 investment will be used to expand the Healthy Humans HealthHub continuity-care platform to additional physician practices and insurers. The Garber Fund was established in 1999 with a $5 million commitment from Penn State alumnus John Garber and his wife Bette to bring reality to the teaching of entrepreneurship and venture capital. Penn State team takes third place at idea to product global contest

Buzby Networks, Penn State's entry to the 2009 Idea to Product (I2P) Global Competition, took third place and a $2,500 prize in the contest's Technology Entrepreneurship Society Global Championship round.
