Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

A forest products researcher in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences is playing a role in a national effort to gauge the viability of wood and wood waste as feedstocks for jet fuel and other high-value co-products. As part of a multi-institutional consortium, Paul Smith, professor of forest products marketing at Penn State, will lead a group that will quantify environmental and social values and determine how those values influence purchasing decisions for biofuel-based products. "This is an exciting opportunity to work with a world-class team of industrial, academic and government researchers to address one of society's most pressing challenges," said Smith, who before coming to Penn State worked for five years as an industrial forester in Colorado and Montana, and for two years as operations manager for a wood products export-trading company in the Pacific Northwest. IT power-saving initiative could save Penn State $800,000 annually

Software designed to ensure the highly efficient operation of computers has been deployed on more than 120 machines in the weather center and other areas in the Department of Meteorology.

As electricity costs continue to skyrocket, executives around the country are searching for ways to reduce energy consumption and increase sustainability. At Penn State, a University-wide team has invested in software called BigFix to enable more efficient power management of computers. The software is part of an overarching systems management initiative that could reduce Penn State's power bill by about $800,000 annually. (more)

University Park, Pa -- Alternate viewing locations are available across the University Park campus for those unable to attend President Barack Obama's Thursday (Feb. 3) speech in person. Obama is speaking in Rec Hall on the campus during a ticketed event with an expected crowd of 3,000 people.The speech will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network beginning at noon Eastern time on Thursday, Feb. 3, and will be shown at alternate viewing sites on campus.
