Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Two weeks left for alumni members to vote In Alumni Council election

Alumni members of the Penn State Alumni Association have two weeks left to vote in the Alumni Association's Alumni Council election, which runs through midnight, May 31. Ballot instructions and a link were emailed to each eligible voter on May 8. Elected alumni will represent the more than 557,000 Penn Staters by giving them a voice in the running of the Alumni Association. (more)

The Penn State Beaver Student Government Association (SGA) has announced election results for officers for the 2012-13 academic year. All officers will be sophomores in the fall. Election results for class representatives will be announced prior to the start of the fall semester. The election results are as follows: Je Qa Powe, president; Dora Tweneboah, vice president; Angelique Matthews, secretary; and Jon Lach, treasurer. With every presidential election comes a new class of college freshmen, many of whom will be voting for the first time. With that in mind, every four years Michael Berkman, professor of political science at Penn State, offers a first-year seminar, a general requirement for freshman students, focusing on the election. His goal is to acclimate young voters to the electoral process, get them engaged in voting and help them understand the meaning and importance behind that year's election. (more)
