A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State has formed a new, interdisciplinary research center to study the strength and security of the global financial system. The Center for the Study of Global Financial Stability seeks to build academic, government and industry partnerships to engage in joint research efforts that will develop a better understanding of the complexity of the global financial markets and help improve international financial stability. The main objective of the center is to contribute to the understanding of the global financial system and identify new approaches to use data to monitor the global financial system and enhance its stability, ultimately leading to improved financial regulation, better-informed policy decisions, and industry-led, market-driven stability initiatives. WPSU cancels programs and reduces staff in response to fiscal pressure

Following a thorough examination of the staffing and organizational structure, WPSU has made the difficult decision to cancel two television programs and eliminate eight staff positions today (June 24). "Scholastic Scrimmage," a quiz show featuring the best and brightest from central Pennsylvania high schools and "Common Ground Lobby Talks," a community-oriented show featuring Penn State faculty and audience participation, will be canceled. "The Economy and the Graduate," a one-hour show scheduled to air at 7 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, May 5, on the Big Ten Network, covers three global executives' perspectives on the short-term economy, as well as strategies and advice for recent college graduates and students to secure employment during the national economic downturn. The show, recorded at the Smeal College of Business before a live student audience, features a question-and-answer panel format on topics ranging from the idea of protecting an individual's "brand" as an employable worker, the roles of networking and a good mentor, and the effects of setting lofty long-term goals. It's an understatement to say that the current economic crisis in America is severe and will have long-lasting impacts, but it's far from the Great Depression, and government intervention is absolutely necessary to come up with a solution to the problem. Those and other observations were shared Wednesday, Feb. 4, when Penn State Harrisburg presented the first installment of its spring Current Events Series featuring faculty from the School of Business Administration addressing "The Financial Crisis." Faced with a national economic downturn with no clear timeline for recovery, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine today (Jan. 27) announced several cost containment actions. They include a selective hiring freeze with a focus on reducing total staff, a review of planned capital purchases and a mid-year budget reduction for the College of Medicine. (more)
