Rural America is vastly different than it was 50 years ago. Prosperity for many rural communities depends on innovative income-generating strategies, such as extracting alternative energy sources. Today, agricultural producers need to be sophisticated business professionals. With one of the nation's largest rural populations, Pennsylvania's economy is dependent upon its rural communities. This fall, Penn State Law will launch its new Rural Economic Development Clinic to support this important sector of our economy, giving law students hands-on learning experience in a wide variety of legal issues specifically faced by agricultural businesses and rural communities. A nationally recognized expert on economic development will be hosting a forum for faculty, staff and students at Penn State the first week of February. Ed Morrison, staff member of the Center for Regional Development at Purdue University, will hold a talk on "Strategic Doing: Regional Engagement" from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 3, in the Faculty Staff Club room of The Nittany Lion Inn. In addition to the talk, the program will feature a question and answer session, and a meet and greet reception. (more)

The Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center (RMC), located on the Penn State Harrisburg campus, has played a key role in the creation of a $10 million electronics recycling facility, Kuusakoski Philadelphia LLC. The RMC provided management support through all phases of the economic development project. (more)

As the nation grapples with a severe recession, economists in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences have published a new report that suggests which industries and areas in Pennsylvania may experience expansion or decline in employment in the upturn expected to follow the recession. (more)

Proactive policies are needed to facilitate broadband Internet access and adoption in rural areas so that rural hospitals, schools and businesses can drive social and economic development and better position themselves to compete, say Penn State researchers in a recently released report from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania.
