Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Rural America is vastly different than it was 50 years ago. Prosperity for many rural communities depends on innovative income-generating strategies, such as extracting alternative energy sources. Today, agricultural producers need to be sophisticated business professionals. With one of the nation's largest rural populations, Pennsylvania's economy is dependent upon its rural communities. This fall, Penn State Law will launch its new Rural Economic Development Clinic to support this important sector of our economy, giving law students hands-on learning experience in a wide variety of legal issues specifically faced by agricultural businesses and rural communities. A nationally recognized expert on economic development will be hosting a forum for faculty, staff and students at Penn State the first week of February. Ed Morrison, staff member of the Center for Regional Development at Purdue University, will hold a talk on "Strategic Doing: Regional Engagement" from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 3, in the Faculty Staff Club room of The Nittany Lion Inn. In addition to the talk, the program will feature a question and answer session, and a meet and greet reception. (more)

The Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center (RMC), located on the Penn State Harrisburg campus, has played a key role in the creation of a $10 million electronics recycling facility, Kuusakoski Philadelphia LLC. Proactive policies are needed to facilitate broadband Internet access and adoption in rural areas so that rural hospitals, schools and businesses can drive social and economic development and better position themselves to compete, say Penn State researchers in a recently released report from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania.
