Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Nurses who care for patients with dementia now have a tailored approach to dental hygiene for their charges, thanks to a pilot study by Rita A. Adults with dementia and delirium may soon have a way to combat their delirium, thanks to a five-year, $2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Delirium, defined as a state of mental confusion, occurs in more than half of all hospitalized older adults with dementia. If delirium continues, it can interfere with patient rehabilitation and there is a very high risk of permanent institutionalization. (more)

Nurses will test method to identify delirium in dementia patients

In the future, nurses may more accurately detect and alleviate symptoms of delirium in persons with dementia, thanks to a five-year, $2.7-million grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research. The project, led by Donna Fick, professor of nursing, Penn State, seeks to improve nurses' assessment skills and reduce the use of drugs to treat delirium and dementia. (more)

Caring for an elderly family member can be stressful and can pose health threats to caregivers. Steven Zarit, professor and head of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State, received a $3 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to study the effects of caregiving on familial caregivers. He will look at people who care for family members with dementia and how adult day care impacts the stress levels of all individuals involved. (more)

As the recipient of a Brookdale Leadership in Aging fellowship, Rita Jablonski, assistant professor of nursing, will spend the next two years developing and perfecting an educational intervention designed to promote better standards of oral nursing care for persons with dementia. (more)
