Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

David Hall, who has served as interim dean of the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) since Jan. 1, has been appointed dean of the college by Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Sept. 17). "In the process of searching nationally, we found that we had an outstanding leader already at the helm. Dr. Hall has done an exemplary job as interim dean. He has the right vision, values and drive to enhance the college in the years ahead," said Rod Erickson, executive vice president and provost of the University. (more)

Dewey named dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications

Barbara I. Dewey, dean of Libraries and professor at the University of Tennessee, has been appointed Penn State's dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications, effective August 1, pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees. She will succeed Nancy Eaton, who has held the position since 1997 and will continue her ties with the University in retirement as dean emeritus. (more)

College names dean of construction and design technologies

Marc E. Bridgens has been appointed dean of the School of Construction and Design Technologies at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Bridgens, who had been serving in an interim capacity, succeeds Tom F. Gregory, who was named associate vice president for instruction. Anne K. Soucy has been named assistant dean at the school. She had been a department head and faculty member in drafting and CAD technology. (more)
