Even though Idaho recently surpassed Pennsylvania as the fourth largest dairy state in the country -- behind California, Wisconsin and New York -- the dairy industry is still huge and thriving in the Keystone State, according to an expert in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. However, said Chad Dechow, associate professor of dairy cattle genetics, the dairy industry in Pennsylvania may face rapid change, as a long period of low milk prices could accelerate dairy-farm consolidation. Memorial Day marked the unofficial kick-off of barbecue season, and a meat specialist in Penn State State's College of Agricultural Sciences said the watchword for 2010 is variety. Chris Raines, assistant professor of meat science and technology in the college's dairy and animal science department, said while trends run the gamut from luxury grills to the medical benefits of marinades, three significant developments can be identified.

Pennsylvania dairy farms are invited to apply for this year's Dairy of Distinction Award from the Northeast Dairy Farm Beautification Program. Applications must be submitted by April 15. The award is based on the idea that attractive farmsteads enhance consumer confidence in the wholesomeness of milk and stimulate milk sales and public support for the industry. Dairies receiving the highest scores in each of 10 Pennsylvania districts will be awarded an 18-inch-by-24-inch Dairy of Distinction sign to display in front of their farm. (more)

It may sound overly simplistic, but when it comes to feeding livestock, what goes into an animal greatly influences what comes out. On that obvious principle is based a promising Penn State research initiative involving precision feeding of dairy cattle. Feed management is now a leading component of comprehensive nutrient-management plans, according to project leader Virginia Ishler, nutrient-management extension specialist in the College of Agricultural Sciences. For more than six years, Bradford County dairy producer Glen Gorrell has relied on Penn State Extension to help him run a profitable business. Through Extension's Dairy Alliance program, Gorrell has long benefited from useful tips on labor management and financial stewardship at his Smithfield dairy. Over the past year, though, Penn State has helped increase Gorrell's bottom line in a new way -- by helping him keep his 570 dairy cows healthier and more productive. (more)
