Penn State conference to discuss future of land-grant universities

The land-grant frescoe in Old Main on Penn State's University Park campus pays tribute to the establishment of the University and land-grant education.
Tuesday, June 07, 2011

Although state support is decreasing for land-grant institutions such as Penn State, these public universities still are committed to sharing knowledge and expertise with the people of their states through extension and outreach programs. In Pennsylvania, the legislature is considering a partial restoration of the large cut in appropriations to public universities recommended by the governor in March. This uncertain situation is prompting Penn State, and other land-grant universities across the nation, to re-evaluate the outreach services they provide as part of their land-grant mission, in addition to teaching and research. That's just one of the many issues that will be discussed when Penn State hosts a scholarly conference, "The Legacy and the Promise: 150 years of Land-Grant Universities," June 22-24, at The Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus. Heard on Campus: Brenda Harms

Monday, May 10, 2010

Monday, May 10, 2010

"We have a perfect storm in higher education: changing demographics, the rising cost to attend -- a 47 percent increase in public higher education in the last 10 years -- increased competition for students and the economy. ... The increase in the 25-and-older population is the single fastest growing population in higher education. When proprietary institutions [for-profit education companies] came on board, they went after adults. Your opportunity is starting to be chipped away at by the proprietaries. Competition is really on the rise."

-- Brenda K. Harms, principal consultant for Stamats Inc., presenting the keynote address on Stamats' latest research findings on recruitment and retention of adult learners at this year's Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference. Sponsored by the Penn State Commission for Adult Learners, the theme for the 11th Hendrick conference was "Innovation 2010: Opportunities for the New Decade." (more)
