The organizers of an April 15 concert by The Fray, Jack's Mannequin and Andy Grammer had to negotiate not only with the bands, but with students on three campuses. Opera singer Jose Carreras will perform at 8 p.m. on March 18 the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. One of contemporary opera's most celebrated figures, Carreras has sold more than 60 million records worldwide. Carreras' visit to the Jordan Center also will benefit the region, as a special meet-and-greet reception after the concert will serve as a fund-raiser for the American Red Cross. (more)
The holiday season will be in full swing on Saturday, Dec. 10 when the Penn State School of Music choral group Essence of Joy and community choral group Essence 2 take the stage for WPSU's "Winterfest '11: Our Gift in Song" at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. Guests must be seated by 7:15 p.m.
Tickets are on sale now for the Celebration of Music set for Friday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. at Penn State York. Tiffany Barlow, a senior in human development and family studies (HD FS) at York, decided to put together an evening of music to raise funds for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Barlow, from Fairfield, Pa., is working with EOP students and the program as part of her HD FS internship. The musical celebration is in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building at the campus.
"The reason for the Celebration of Music is to raise money for the EOP," said Barlow. "This important program provides opportunities to students of limited financial means who are interested in Penn State and who show academic promise and ability but may not initially fall within the general admission standards in terms of high school grades and standardized test scores. The EOP offers support and resources for these students to help them throughout college and help them succeed." (more)
It will be a fabulous night in Rec Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 2 when the Nittany Lion and Lady Lion basketball teams host "Hoops Madness" with a special performance by top selling rap artist Fabolous. Rec Hall, the venerable former home of Penn State basketball, will once again shake with hoops hysteria on Nov. 2. New Nittany Lion coach Patrick Chambers and the 2011-12 Nittany Lions led by junior guard Tim Frazier and fifth-year Lady Lion coach Coquese Washington and a 2011-12 Lady Lion team that returns four starters led by All-Big Ten guard Alex Bentley will be introduced to Nittany Nation during the free preseason event.
