Practicality versus passion, an age-old and yet still current debate for college students: do I major in something practical or follow my passion? Jennifer Crandell decided to follow her passion -- and it paid off. Crandell recently graduated as the student marshal for the College of Arts and Architecture, earning dual bachelor of arts degrees in integrative arts, with a photography focus (College of Arts and Architecture), and film/video (College of Communications). Penn State Beaver held its spring commencement Friday, May 4 in the Student Union Building auditorium. Fifty-eight students received master's, baccalaureate, and associate degrees. The academic processional and recessional and convention of proceedings were led by Daniel W. Smith, instructor in business. Donna J. Kuga, director of academic affairs, presented the degrees, which were conferred by Chancellor Gary B. Keefer in conjunction with John Feraco, president of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and manufacturing leader for NOVA Chemicals, Inc. Keefer also introduced the commencement speaker, Julian Gray, certified elder law attorney. (more)

Technology is helping communication companies merge telephone, television and Internet services, but a push to deregulate may leave some customers on the wrong side of the digital divide during this convergence, according to a Penn State telecommunications researcher.
"Moving away from copper lines is an example of abandoning obsolete technology and embracing technology that is faster, better, cheaper and more convenient," said Rob Frieden, Pioneers Chair in Cable Television and professor of telecommunications and law. "But the risk is that we may be creating a digital divide -- not necessarily a divide between the rich and poor, but between the information rich and information poor." (more)

Students on the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team are putting the finishing touches on presentations and materials in preparation for the EcoCAR 2 Year One Final Competition in Los Angeles beginning Thursday, May 17. Penn State is one of 15 North American teams competing in EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of a General Motors-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu by improving its fuel efficiency and reducing its emissions while retaining its performance and consumer appeal. Throughout year one, students were hard at work designing their advanced propulsion technologies to incorporate in their vehicle in years two and three. (more)

Penn State claimed its first-ever national championship in a program often called "the Pulitzers of college journalism." The College of Communications at Penn State, fueled by strong across-the-board performances, earned the 2011-12 William R. Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program.
The annual competition in writing, broadcasting, photojournalism and multimedia is open to students from the country's 108 nationally accredited mass communication programs. It draws more than 1,000 student entries each year. (more)
